interchangability of seats
I just picked up a '99 ranger XL xtra cab and, although it is in great overall shape, the drivers seat back is caving in. It seems like there are two rods that run from the top to the bottom and they came apart from the bottom.
My question is, what seats, from what years, will bolt right in?

I also own a 99 xcap and I successfully replaced my nasty 60/40 seats with some full power seats from a '97 explorer. The only change I had to make was drill out the mounting holes on the seat bases to 5/8" (from an approx. 3/8" odd shaped hole).
The seat belt took a bit of additional work. The receivers had to be swapped from my original seats and I had to find the side mount from a ranger that originally came with 40/40 seats. I guess I could have just bent the explorer seat belt bracket to fit, but using the right part was easier.

Not trying to burn anyone by my remark its a common question. I dont have any pull to make it a sticky but it would be helpful to alot of people if it was.
Alot of other seats will fit as well as the ones mentioned above some would just take a little fab work dont know if you wanna go through that much trouble though.

hmm......i happen to have some pics you mgiht enjoy....
These are my stock 60/40 seats...but naked!
Here, you can see that one of those rod's tack welds broke. The other, just popped off their tacks and was sticking out backward. It's somewhat fairly common on the 60/40s i've noticed. Also, by the right butt cheek, there always seems to be a "ripple" in the fabric, and it eventually wears a hole into it.
Here, you can see how it's supposed to be...

Back when i had my 94 Ranger Ford and I just about went to war over the seat and fabric. On the drivers side seat left hand side a pice on metal kept rubbing a hole from the inside out. They replaced it 3 times and refused a 4th time. They said I was not treating the equipment properly, something in my pocket did it, too fat etc. I asked the rep on the phone if he thought 165lbs was too fat for someone 5 ft 8. He never answered.
Good luck.
Sorry I had to share that one.
