1993 Ford ranger 4 wheel drivelroblem
My Ford Ranger, standard transmission, is stuck in 2 wheel drive and will not go into 4 wheel drive. Don’t know if it is electrical or mechanical. How do you check for this? It previously went into 4 wheel drive by pushing the button. Now nothing happens.

Welcome to the forum
1993 Ranger 4x4 electric shift uses a 3 part system
The dash switch, which never breaks
Then 4x4 control module, behind drivers seat, rarely breaks
The electric shift motor on transfer case, often needs to be rebuilt/cleaned, because of DISUSE, lol
First thing to check are the fuses
In the Engine Bay fuse box is a larger 20amp fuse for the Shift Motor
In the cab fuse box is a 15amp fuse for the 4x4 Controller
If fuses are OK then get under the truck and tap on the shift motor with a hammer, then try shifting
If it start to work then shift motor is dirty inside and needs to be cleaned, or replaced
If it still doesn't work then remove shift motor from transfer case and test if it works using the trucks battery directly
If motor does not work when powered directly then clean it or replace it, seen here: https://www.therangerstation.com/tec...e-shift-motor/
In the above link you will see the YELLOW and ORANGE wires that go to the "motor" part of shift motor, those are the wires you apply 12volts and Ground to, to see if motor works, there is no polarity, the motor needs to spin in BOTH directions(like power window motor) so apply + and - and the reverse it to - and + to make sure motor spins in BOPTH directions
If MOTOR WORKS
Have a read here for testing the electric part of the system: https://www.therangerstation.com/tec...is-1994-older/
As said the 4x4 module is behind drivers seat, and behind the plastic panel.......................usually
The 4x4 system in 1993 also came with AUTOMATIC locking and unlocking front Hubs/Wheels, these have nothing to do with 4WD lights on the dash or shifting of transfer case into 2WD or 4WD
If you can shift into 4WD, i.e. light on dash comes on, but you don't think its actually in 4WD then it could be 1 or both Auto Hubs are not working
Most replace the Auto Hubs with MANUAL Hubs, which is the best advise, but you can rebuild them, new parts are just hard to fined
