Morning all, I was wondering if it’s possible to swap a 97 4r55e into a 5r55e truck. I have the 4.0. Does everything match over bell housing, wiring harness, etc. thank you!

 

Yes, and no

4R55E and 5R55E are the same transmissions internally, the 5R is not a 5-speed, its a 4-speed same as the 4R, the computer just turns the Over Drive on in 1st to get a faux 2nd, which made for smoother shifting, so difference is in the computer not the transmission

You can swap in a 1995-1997 4R55E(55E only came on 4.0l engines) into a 1998 to 2000 Ranger 4.0l that used a 5R55E, and the 4R55E will act/shift, just like the 5R55E did because it has the 5R computer

In 2001 Ford added 2 external sensor to the 5R55E(and 5R44E), the OSS sensor and the ISS sensor, so you can't use a 1995-2000 5R55E in a 2001-2011 Ranger 4.0l
The 1995-2000 transmission case doesn't have holes for these sensors, its a different casting

So yes, if the 1997 4R55E its going into a 1995 to 2000 Ranger 4.0l
No, if you want to put it in a 2001 - 2011 Ranger 4.0l

You CAN put a 2001-2011 4.0l 5R55E into a 1995-2000 4.0l, as these extra sensors are just not used, plugged in

And as always 2WD or 4x4 MUST MATCH in transmission swaps of any kind
