2.3 Gas Mileage/ Engine Question

im only getting 17-20 MPG in city and my exaust smells very rich with unburnt fuel. The exaust is stock as far as i know. Any thoughts?

i've got a 96 2.3 5spd and
i'm getting around 29mpg....no B.S...i just filled up today...i did the math
133 miles driven and i topped off with about 4.6 gallons
i got 28.6 mpg with a mix of city and highway driving

i'm waiting for the Branson trip to see some awesome mileage

all i've got is a custom air intake and custom side exhaust exiting before the rear wheel
along with New plugs and wires

i'd say check your plugs and wires....for some reason you're not burning all your fuel....
once i changed mine last week my mileage jumped from 23 to the 28 stated above

plug gap should be at .044
mine were burned well over .060

hmmm.....

have you tried the airbox mod?
let some more air in that beast

i noticed a huge difference in power once i modded mine.

you may even want to try Seafoaming it.
3 cans....1 in the oil, 1 in the gas and 1 sucked into the brake boost line

it helps clean up all the gunk built up in the engine

Im getting CEL codes that i have insuffient EGR flow, but i dont think that would effect my mileage, would it? Also gives a code that says something about exceding factory emissions standards.

you basically just drill more holes into your airbox to allow more air flow into the filter....

my truck had a FRAM aftermarket kit when i bought it which was crap...it used a smaller air inlet than the STOCK housing
so i did a little modifying on the same idea and i noticed MUCH improved throttle response and gas mileage

ive attached a cone filter to the MAF (or whatever ford calls it) which does the same thing.
The intake still has the silencer in it tho as i cannot find a correct size pipe to replace it.

Take the silencer out, reach down inside it with a pair of needle nose pliers, and pull the "torpedo" out. That will leave you with a straight through tube. Quick, easy, and worth it.

Hmm, I've done it to a 92 and a 94, I assumed yours would be the same with the lima 2.3.

The intake end of the silencer bottlenecks the air, the outlet end is the full width. Could breathe better if i could find a replacement. Was thinking a piece of pipe from an exaust shop.

Yah, that is different from what I'm used to seeing. I see what you mean about it. A piece of exhaust tubing would work if you can get the right diameter, or, you can go redneck with a piece of PVC pipe.
