very low gas mileage and smell of gas

my 96 ranger has the check engine light on and the gas mileage is crap. i also smell gas occasionally. help please

^yeah definitely check the code. Most auto part stores have code readers that you can use

Check for external leaks and also check your fuel pressure regulator. If the diaphragm is bad in the regulator it will suck excess gas into intake.

Sometimes a misfiring spark plug can cause a gas smell out the exhaust. Have a local autozone check the code. That'll clear things up.
