2005+ info
2005+ info
I've tried looking this up but must not know exactly what to ask. Google keeps wanting to sell me a Ranger. I don't even know what I want yet. I found out something, and it's about the dashboard for a 2005 Ranger. It fits in the project car I have. I also want to get one with a 4.0 SOHC. The question I have is what years have the same dash? Obviously just denoting the body style probably won't help. Need actual folks who maybe spent some time in the boneyards seeing that "hey! This dash is the same as the one on my truck." I know there's some weirdos like me (I'm more versed than most on 67-72 F series and 71-80 Pintos) so I know SOMEONE knows.
Welcome to the forum
2004 and up Rangers have a "digital" dash, called an HEC(hybrid electronic cluster)
It has a microprocessor in it that has a unique ID
The PCM(engine/trans computer) and dash are "married" at the factory
With key on the computer starts up and communicates with the Cluster, using RSA encryption, they both need to have a good "handshake" or engine will not start
The 2004 and up dashes also only have 2 analog signal gauges left, coolant temp and fuel level, the rest are digital but displayed in analog
The digital gauges get info from computer(PCM)
PCM and dash's odometer are also synced, which is why Ford went this way, many older Fords would get odometer or whole dash swaps to lower actual miles for reselling
Can't do that with these
Only a Ford dealer can remarry PCM to cluster if either needs to be swapped out, and Ford dealer can not reset odometer in dash if it needs to be swapped, only Fords main electronics department can
So if a 2004, or up, cluster fails, Ford dealer has to request a new cluster from Ford with printout of PCMs data showing odometer numbers plus the other codes
Ford then programs the new cluster and sends it out to dealer, dealer then installs and remarries it
So look at 2003 and older clusters
