2007 4x2 Travel trailer towing

Hello,

First post on the forum, glad I found this group! I’ve got a 2007 Super cab XLT 4x2 with the 4.0 auto and I’ve got a few questions about towing:

1. Ranger is rated to tow about 6k pounds fully equipped, I was planning on installing the trailer brakes and already have the whole hitch set up, was curious how it would do towing a 17 foot (tongue included) ‘94 single axel travel trailer which is about 3700 pounds fully loaded?

2. Anybody have any issues with frontal area when towing? Because this travel trailer is roughly about 60-65 sq. Ft frontal area (it’s a Bigfoot cb, so wide, short, and light) and I know the recommended frontal area is quite small.

3. Overall, you think this ranger would hold up towing this travel trailer for longer distances and trips across the western US (Washington resident) or should I consider upgrading to a half ton?

Thanks for all your input! Glad to be apart of this group!

Welcome to the forum

2007 Ford Towing guide seen here: https://www.fleet.ford.com/content/d...VTTowGuide.pdf

Bottom of page 18 is where Ranger is listed

A Ranger supercab 4.0l WITH AN AUTOMATIC is listed at 5,860lbs
Manual is only listed for 3,380lbs

Bottom of page 15 is Frontal area limitations, Ranger is 50sq/ft so you will be over that limit so will have a tough time holding speed
This might push you towards a V8 F-150 but its still limited to 60sq/ft
So you might try out the Ranger and see how it does

There is also GCWR(gross combined weight rating) to consider, your model is rated as 9,500lbs, Manual trans 7,000lbs
This is the total weight on the road of vehicle and trailer, with all people and cargo included
Your model Ranger should weigh in at 3,450lbs(curb weight)
That leaves you with 6,050lbs for people, cargo and trailer with its cargo
3,700lbs trailer drops it to 2,350lbs which should be plenty for people and cargo in the truck and trailer

Overall I think with a tall and wide 3,700lbs trailer and a 3,450lbs vehicle you will get pushed around alot by the wind load, and MPG won't be that great because of that, so larger truck might be the better choice for long term towing
