Starting in 2001.5(mid-year 2001) Rangers got the 2.3l DOHC Mazda L engine as the replacement 4cyl engine(replaced 2.3l/2.5l Lima engine)

Ford calls this engine the 2.3l Duratec
As l545s said, it uses a timing chain and no regular service to the chain or tensioner is required unless there is a problem, if you are hearing a rattles from the front of the engine then that would require service

2.3l/2.5l Lima engines, 1983 to 2001 Rangers, did use a timing belt which required replacement every 80k miles
