There are three types of calibrations in the U.S.

Federal:
Meets all federally mandated emission standards.
Sold in U.S states other than "Green States"

California or "Green State":
Meets all California ARB emission standards.
Sold in so-called Green States (California, Maine, Massachusetts, New York and Vermont)

50-state:
A unified calibration that meets all federal and California standards.
Sold in all 50 states

A 50-state calibration is definitely legal in California. A federal calibration is legal, too, for people moving to the state with their vehicle. It is not legal for a California resident to buy a new vehicle with a federal calibration and "import" it into California. There are a few exceptions but they are very strict.

When it gets smogged, they will know if it's not a California-legal calibration from the Certification Label and/or the Emission Compliance Label.

Before you bring it back to California, you should look into the possibility of an exemption, assuming that you are active duty military assigned outside of California. This has surely come up before and they should have a procedure for dealing with it.

just add another $800 catylitic converter to show them, yes, when that tin can gets a hole in it you will run down to napa and dump a ton of money on something that no one really needs =) thats the difference as far as i can tell...... just another way to make killer money off the auto owners.

My 98 Ranger came with California emissions, and as far as I can tell, it has 1 more cat than Federal emissions equipped Rangers.

well if you know anyone in mariposa county you can just register it at there house. mariposa county has no emmision's testing there. and you dont have to smog your vehical. if you dont know anyone in mariposa county just take the drive over there and get a P.O Box and go to the DMV there and give them your P.O.Box as your address. and if they ask for a living address then just make one up and tell them not to send anything there just to sent it to your P.O.Box. that is what i did with my 86 ranger because it wouldnt pass the smog test. The damn HC was to high. well try smoging it first and see if it passes and if not dont do it again because you dont want it to be a mass-Poluter. then california gets even more strict.
