95 ford ranger xlt 3.0 2wd automatic

Would crank over but not start, replaced fuel filter would start again for a couple weeks then nothing, replaced fuel pump tested pressure, fuel pump was bad, a week later off and on starting problems. If I tap on the fuel filter it usually works again, I've replaced the fuel filter 3 times all clear fuel. Any ideas what it could be? I replaced the relay when it had problems and no change.

To start I would do 50/50 test just to confirm its a fuel issue
Spray gasoline or starting fluid(ether) into the engine and try to start it
If it starts and then dies then fuel delivery IS the issue
If it doesn't start then Spark(or compression) is the issue
50/50 instant results, no guessing

Whats the fuel pressure now?

Did you use a Motorcraft fuel pump?
Other brands are MUCH CHEAPER, but you some times have to replace them 2 or 3 times to get one that works longer than the warranty, so heads up

Did you clean the filter in the tank or did the new pump come with a new filter(sock)?

Tapping on the filter wouldn't effect anything, so not sure that means anything unless there is wiring nearby thats effecting fuel pump power

You should HEAR the fuel pump run for 2 seconds with key on, so cycle key on and off as much as needed to see if you can HEAR it run, its not quiet, you will HEAR a HUMMMMM coming from fuel tank

If no HUMMMM then you need to check if 12volts is going back to gas tank

In the cab on passenger side under glove box area is the Inertia switch, its there to cut power to fuel pump in an accident, sudden stop or roll over
It has 2 terminals 12v IN and 12v OUT
It has a red button on the top, it will pop up if switch has been tripped, and can be pressed back down to reset it
Inertia switch looks like this: https://static.cargurus.com/images/s...1600x1200.jpeg
It can also be behind the kick panel on passenger side, Ford moved it around, but it will always be in that area

So get a test light or volt meter, and ground it, then test either terminal, you need to turn key ON and you should see 12volts for 2 seconds, after that you may see 5 to 8volts thats from the computer, a monitor circuit, no amps
You are testing to see the 12volts for those 2 seconds, so cycle key off and on as much as needed to get good test, you can switch terminals on inertia switch as well both should show the 12v for 2 seconds
And you should HEAR the fuel pump as well

If you get the 12v and don't hear the pump then new pump or the wire is the issue
