If you are going things the right way, with a torque wrench, you are not supposed to use any antiseeze.

Sorry to hear about this Jason! Good thing no damage occured. I also agree with the advice that checking them after some miles.

 

I had some speed-related 'ticking' lately. Fortunately it turned out to be 5-6 pea-sized stones in the tread. BFG's seem to like to pick up gravel and bring it along for the ride..

thats incorrect. for older studs, sometimes the threading isnt the best, due to rust and other factors, a small dab of antiseize helps to make sure you dont, well, seize the nut on the stud. it has nothing to do with torqueing, BUT if you put too much, it creates a fluid bubble inside close ended lugnuts. the pressure from the fluid and nowhere to go will create a false torque reading, even with a well calirated torque wrench...

i had a buddy loose his front tire on his lifted 91 f-150 completely cause the lugs only on the pass. front decided to all come loose..that was scary.. nose dive and then watching the tire cruise down the ditch

 

For those that didn't read.. There was NO anti-seize on the nuts.. not the cause..

I should've learned. The last time I went there, I took my escort in for four new tires, mounted and balanced. I got about ten feet from my parking spot and heard a wierd noise. I gained some speed. Another twenty or so feet later, I hear another clink. Only louder this time as I had accelerated a good bit. And another right after that. I pull over and realize I just lost all but one of my wheel weights =\ Thanks Sears!!

 

I can relate to that one.

I bought an electric impact gun to help with lug nuts and it's just nice to have for those stubborn rusty bolts.

Anyway, I used it the first time to help me rotate my tires and speed things up. I hammered them all on and everything was cool.

A week or so later I was driving to work and heard a clunk clunk clunk noise starting and a slight vibration in my steering wheel. I pulled over and checked the front end and the tires.....nothing that screamed out at me. So I kept on going and got a nasty vibration at anything past slow.....LOL

I pulled into a gas station and did a couple figure 8's from lock to lock to try to "find" the problem or where the noise was comming from. Well after doing a few 8's, and very slow 8's I might add, I was looking out my window at my drivers tire when BANG. The truck hits a cement post on the corner on the sidewalk around the gas station building. Talk about sh*t luck.

Anyway, after spending almost a grand in repalcement parts (Westin bar, foglights) and body work (bumper mounts, facia) and paint......it was a gran mistake that was caused by not checking my lug nuts. They were all able to be spun by finger. It was the front right tire that was really loose though.

Long story short.....ALWAYS check your lug nuts before driving off....well at least after you're messed with them. LOL

Turns out the gun only has so much lbs/ft to it. A little hand cranking with the tire iron is needed for the final seat.

it has also happened to me i heard a tick tick tick sound from my drivers side front tire when i turned and i dint know what it was so i turned up my radio and whet on my way on the highway doing 80 and when i got home i went and looked and i noticed that 3 out of 5 were loose to turn off by finger!!! i was like omg i not doing the turn up the radio trick no more lol

Del Sol only has 4 lugs per wheel. Must have been an exciting drive with no lug nugs!

 

Also, I had one of my adapters come loose (at a Centralia meet, after driving over 1000 miles from FL with no trouble) but I knew what it was right away because the truck tracked perfectly in a straight line, but vibrated/shimmied on even the slightest corner. Luckily between D. and a few others we had enough tools to get them re-tightened. I've carried a huge breaker bar in my truck ever since.

That said, everyone needs to be careful not to OVERtorque their lugnuts, esp. anyone with aluminum wheels. Its fairly easy to deform aluminum, and that leads to stress fractures! (Or, if you're TBarCYa, you test your aluminum wheels by having a brake caliper come off the bracket and punch right through the inside of the wheel, costing you an entire weekend of offroading at Centralia.)

a few years ago, it happened to my dad's ford econoline conversion van while we were on 76 near philadelphia doing about 70mph. the left rear wheel popped completely off- van swerved violently back and forth in two lanes of moving holiday traffic, a concrete median in the center, one narrow shoulder, and a compeltely rocky wall on the right. luckily my dad was able to stop the damn thing before killing anyone. we were headed down the shore for the weekend.. that morning my dad picked the van up from a shop where he had a new set of tires put on.. turns out some new kid forgot to tighten the lugs.. needless to say he was fired and my dad has since found a new mechanic to go to.

when my dad and a cop went looking for our wheel an hour or so after the accident.. they found it about a mile up the road leaning up against the median, lol.
