When I did my first 5.0L Ranger I thought about a larger tank too but the Std Cab, Short Box, is limited to the smallest of tanks from the Factory and I think the Ext Cabs have the largest.
There are companies out there that make tanks but the Ranger’s size limits you.
There is the driveshaft on the side, rear axle in back and other components and cross-menbers in the front; it might go higher but cross-members still run there too.
Get under the truck and start measuring and see what can be put in there.
What about a tank made for the rear of the truck, where the spare tire goes underneath, could work.
Only problem is where to put the spare ?

well my spare crank broke so my spare sits in the bed of my truck anyway, until i can build a holder for my spare or steal one off a bronco. but how do i mount it in the rear without a crossmember and how do i route a butterfly valve with a switch and a sensor, float and what not. is it a hard project? id be willing to swap one out of an old ranger and fab it in mine but is it worth it, or would i just want to do a taller one

I’m guessing here but a bed filler will be needed or a second side filler must be added or if this is a replacement for the mid tank an extension will need to be fitted if even possible.
Sensors, unless you buy them in the new tank they won’t be there, you will have to look at the gauge when the gas gets low.
When buying the new tank ask for a compatible Ford setup, they may have it or maybe not.
A Gauge, no problem, get a sending unit/pump for the Tank with the same resistance as the Ford Gauge has and it should work.
Run new gas and return lines from the front pump back.
Not saying this will be easy but take off the bed and things will be easier.
I have a 21 gal tank out of a Jeep Project and was thinking about a rear tank in my truck but too many other things to do first.
Not sure how big the tank is you have but it is bigger than my 12.? gals.
When/if the 5.0L ever gets in a new tank is a must.

the old bronco 2`s used the same frames as the single cab rangers
this large bad boy should just bolt right in
Bronco II Extra Capacity Fuel Tank
just have to make longer fuel lines , and somehow hook up the emissions lines
