Trans annoyingggggggggg noise

OK, 01 ranger 4x4 offroad XLT 4.0 with 5R55E . The noise happens right before it shifts gears, it sounds just like pinging an engine will do if you have bad gas. It is not from the engine.It is from tranny, It only happens under a load right before shifting into next gear. The only time it does not do it is when it shifts to overdrive. It happens more and louder if the trans is hot from being driven. It has done it since I bought it 2 years ago but just recently gotten louder, It does not seem to hamper performance any, have not noticed any difference in gas mileage no slippage either. I changed trans fluid and filter last summer, did not help at all. Is there a shift modulator on this tranny? Could that be it and how much of a pain is that to change? Of course, Ford dealer says that it is "normal".That is usually what they say when they have NO IDEA. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.
