So I blew out my rear diff doing snow doughnuts in a parking lot up a local mountain a while ago.. Had some issues with my rear-end (no homo) ever since i've had the truck so i'm just gonna replace the whole rear end. I believe its an 8.8 26-spline w/ 3.73 gears correct?? Found one for $250 bucks all ready to go 80,000k on it. Just have to swap the drums from my truck.

Since your going to r an r the thing why dont you find a axle with 4.10 gears in it? Ahh just saw your 4*4 you would need to regear the front to match the back.

btw. you could just drive down into washington and pick up an axle.. they are all over the yards here for way cheaper.. usually only 80-120 bucks! not sure about the logistics for getting it over the border but i think you could figure something out.

8.8 28-splines from Rangers are a dime a dozen around here. The only thing we have more of is 8.8 31-splines from Explorers.

 

Dan, You do not need a passport, just a Drivers License and a Birth Certificate, I went down last week. Only for air travel do you need a PP. Just pay the tax on the axle, have the yard guys write you a receipt for $50 or something. HST will be $6, customs doesn't care about tariffs or duties, and the axle is manufactured in the US or Mexico anyway, therefore, no problem.
Coincidentally, how hard is it to do the alignment after replacing the rear axle? I'm looking at options of either going with a lunchbox locker w/ my 7.5 or replacing the rearend while I'm under there w/ a 8.8. Am I correct that a 28 spline shaft is the same for both?

 

Oh yeah, buy a six pack while you're down there and fill up with gas, the axle will have paid for itself!

 

i cross daily sometimes hourly. they are still gonna hassle you w/o a passport. this western hemisphere passport agreement (i forget the real name), came into effect almost two years ago. they will tell you to get it and maybe even charge you a fine. just because you got that officer on a good day doesn't mean he will. also last time i checked hst was 13% and i was charged that ona recent trip.

as for an alignment, i don't think the rear needs one.

 

HST is 12% in BC, 13% in ON, depends on province. Either way, doesn't amount to much. I agree passport is easier, but both governments official websites state it's not needed sea or land. Last week I even forgot my birth cert. You must've been dealing with some hard asses re. fining

Both sites say something to this effect (taken from the canadian one)

The Government of Canada cautions travellers that the length and extent of this flexibility is entirely at the discretion of U.S. officials.


So Basically if you get lucky you might be let across with a DL and BC but just get a Passport or enhanced DL or you could be denied entry and let me tell you that you don't want that on your record because every future border crossing will be a PITA.

 

they updated then, the signs at the border haven't been changed and still say the status card is being decided. however, how can you deny a native entry into either country?

as far as being hardasses, look at what they do for a living. they are not as bad once you get to know them or see them on a regular basis.

 

I stand corrected! I checked earlier this summer and it wasn't the case. I just checked the WHTI a few minutes ago and yeah, just as you note, there's no mention of just having a dl and BirthC as being enough. I'll start using my PP from now on.
Funny thing is I've been going down every few weeks, even through different crossings, and the DL and Birth cert. have been fine, no problem at all, the only trouble was the one time I forgot my birth cert., and the Canadian guy reminded me to bring it for proof of citizenship. I had no problem going down, just returning.

 

anyways.. ill be going to the yard here in the next couple of days.. i could look around for you and check axle codes cause they are not listed on the online inventorys.. dont know how serious you are about driving accross to save monies but if you are PM me and let me know or something... whats your gearing dood?
