Can't find a replacement gas tank

Hello ranger forum! I bought a 96 ranger single cab long bed for my little sisters first car. It was only $500 bucks and leaked fuel. At first I thought it was the filler neck (which was crusty and split) only to find a long crack up the side of the tank. My problem is I cannot find a replacement tank ANYWHERE. Is there a secret place to find a tank? My local JY punches a hole in tanks to empty them. Any suggestions on where to find a new one?

Welcome to the forum.

Yes, it looks like 1990's was a good decade for gas tanks since no one makes replacements, lol.

I would call a couple of body shops, they may have better resources for finding Ranger gas tanks for a 1996.

Or get your tank repaired or repair it yourself.

Pulling off the bed is only 8 bolts, filler neck and tail light wires.

Or drop the tank from underneath

Once it is out and fuel pump removed flush it out and take it to be repaired or do it yourself.

There is no pressure in a fuel tank except for the weight of the fuel itself, I think regular cab long bed had 20gal tank, so when full, the bottom of the tank would have approx. 160lbs of pressure.
1 pint = 1lb
8 pints in gal
8 x 20gal = 160, slightly less because gasoline doesn't weigh as much as water, 1 pint = 1lb is water weight

EDIT: Didn't read the part about the junkyard punching holes in them. Carry on

How is someone going to fix a fracked plastic tank? I've had old metal tanks fixed at radiator shops before, but never really felt with a plastic tank before. I'll make some calls today.

Mind blown. I will give it a try tomorrow and let you guys know how it goes. I would much rather buy a new one but this could be a solution until I find either a new or used tank. Thanks!

Well people that sell things are usually not hard to find, point of being in business is to let people know you have what they need.

It really surprised me that replacement tanks are not around.

LMC Truck is a great site for older truck parts, just FYI, if they don't have it listed then.............like I said really surprised me.

LMC doesn't carry them either. I've got a 71 Chevy truck I've been restoring and LMC usually has what I need for that truck.

Gave them a call this am. They don't carry the tank and have no idea where to find one. I ordered a plastic gas tank repair kit and I'll give it a try.

I recently bought a 96 Ranger for my son. Long story short it also is cracked and apparently no one makes a 20 gallon replacement tank. I haven't had any luck at the local bone yards either. I'm assuming the 17 gallon tank was used a lot more on different models. My question is. Can I use a 17 gallon tank in place of the 20? At this point I'm not worried about the 3 gallon difference as long as it mounts properly. I have patched the original tank but I'm not real confident in it. I would like to have something lined up. If needed.

I have an original gas tank out of an 89 STX SuperCab. It is the smaller capacity tank. I had a custom metal, larger capacity tank made for it many years ago. I still have the original straps and the thin skid plate that came with it. If you are interested and are ever in SoCal you can come take a look at it to see if it would fit. I don't know if there were any changes to the fuel pump and other stuff form 89 to 96. Yours being a single cab may be different also.

Is this tank still available - know it is a long shot but thought I'd ask.
