Can't read engine code

Well first of all I used to use this site a lot a couple years ago when I had to my 2002 Ranger. I sold it and bought an '03 Dodge Ram Hemi and just recently I sold that and bought a 2001 Ranger regular cab 5 speed with the 2.3. Anyways my check engine light came on so I went to Schuck's and their scanner wouldn't read. The guy said it's happened a couple of times and to try Autozone. So I went there and their scanner was giving an error message as well. Has anybody had this problem before? I really don't want to go to the dealership to try to get this solved. Any help is appreciated.

The first thing to check is fuse 17 in the dash box. It is shared between the cigarette lighter and the Data Link Connector.

You have a blown fuse that supplies power to the interface for the plug the reader connects to most likely.

edit
Bob beat me to it again.

Checked the fuse and it's good. Guess I'll just have to take it to Ford.
