Deep or shallow transmission pan?

Well I sent a friend of mine down to autozone while i was at work to pick me up a tranny filter kit, he calls me and says that they have both a shallow and deep pan version for my truck. 1998 ranger XLT 4x4 4.0(ohv).

Does anyone know what the deal is ?

4x4 is the deep pan.
4x2 is the shallow pan.

it says right on the computer at autozone, but the retards that work there never read it.
