Transmission swap.
Hey everyone, I have a 94 ranger 5 speed but I want to swap to an automatic, my goal for the truck is to make it into an off road truck. I want to get a jump start on it before I leave for bootcamp in October, is it possible to do a swap from a 98 ranger to the 94 ? I’ve had a couple people tell me that it bolts right up an will work.

Welcome to the forum
And thank you for your service
"Bolts right up" is not correct, unless you provided more info to those "people"
Need 1994 specs
Engine size?
2WD or 4x4?
First, automatics made after 1986 will need some computer control, your 1994 Manual trans computer won't have that software, it was only on factory automatic computers
1998 automatic needed full computer control, not available in 1994 models
As far as the "Bolts right up", that depends on what engine your 1994 has now and what the 1998 Ranger has, there is no crossover in those years, they would both need to be 2.3l/2.5l, or both be 3.0l or both be 4.0l
i.e. 3.0l won't fit 4.0l or 2.3l
Also transmissions are made as 2WD or 4x4, no conversions
But even if is does "Bolt right up" you would still have to deal with computer which would require a lot of new wiring and sensors
You could use a C4 or a C5 automatic, no computer needed, but no OverDrive either, it would need to be from a 1974 to 1986 ford car or truck with same engine as your 1994 and same 2WD or 4x4
If your 1994 is a 3.0l then there won't be a match with C4 or C5
