Ive seen a 99 explorer with a manual, just wondering does sport tracs come manual, or how rare are 99+ explor with manuals?

But yes they make them they are just super hard to find. That's what I wanted when I bought my sport trac but I couldn't find one anywhere near me at the time.
A manual swap in a sport trac would be the same as the ranger. Same engine/transmission/transfer case, holes in the floor pan, etc.

I don't believe there are manual explorers after 95, EXCEPT on the Explorer Sport. I could be wrong though it seems like I may have seen 1 or 2. I'm watching a thread on explorer forums where someone is swapping in a 5 speed and manual transfer case into a later model (95-01) Explorer with the 5.0L V8. That would be sweeeeeet.

I don't recall ever seeing any 95+ Regular Ex with a manual....just the sports and the uber rare Trac.

 

Sadly, manual vehicles are becoming a thing of the past.

 

Too true. There are too many idiots that don't know how to drive em and everything these days are about safety and ease of use.

The funny thing is that the govt wants cars to get better gas mileage but its getting harder and harder to find a manual suv or full size truck. manual trannys are know to get better gas mileage but the auto industry cant seem to make a manual tranny for the newer full size trucks or suv.

 

Yeah but with the advancements in technology autos are getting almost the same mpg and are usually 1mpg less than the manual. Manuals are going clutchless on the higher end cars. Lexus is using a 8 speed auto on the new IS-F.

 

Have you seen the 1st gear ratio on those 8spd IS-F?? It's insane. I want to say it's something like 8.50:1 or something. Rear end is only like a 2.85:1...but still. That trans is really trick.

 

i dont see the point in 8 gears all that does is let them put a taller gear in the rear end and put shorter gears in the tranny

 

Downey...It's all about being in the torque curve. Why do you think Semi trucks have 10 or 15 speed trannys and 2spd rear ends? To stay in the torque curve.

What's the point of starting out with a 2spd auto trans and now we've got 5spd and 6spd autos? Why did we start out with 3spd manual gearboxes and now you truck has a 5spd and others have 6spd. Same exact reason....to stay in the torque curve and to provide both better economy and better performance.

Since we are off-topic anyway, has anyone driven the newer VW DSG automatic trans?
6-speed automatic clutchless with launch control, shift paddles or console shift?
I still haven't driven one but I have heard they are very cool. 0-60 and 1/4mi times are faster on the auto than they are with the manual.
The transmission will be engaged in say fourth gear, and if you're accelerating, it will have fifth gear up to speed and ready to engage in a fraction of a second.
Check out some of the youtube videos it is cool. Might be on the wife's next car. As much as I love her Jetta's six-speed manual, she would be better off with an auto I think.

 

It's way too many gears, it constantly changes it's mind on which gear it wants to be in.

ever drive in a gear where its too low for the speed your at and it vibrates the rear end? That's what it does it can't decide what gear is correct for the engine speed and throttle position.
