Engine Swap Dillema
Engine Swap Dillema
Hello -
So I am new to the Ranger world and I have been searching the web for several weeks now. I was gifted a 2005 Ranger, 3.0, 2wd, 5 speed, regular cab because the motor blew up and they just wanted to scrap it. So long story short, like many people that come here, I was initially interested in the Explorer 5.0 swap, but as I read, it appears as though me having a 2005 is going to bring up a lot of electrical issues. So I guess my question is, would it be worth it to just rebuilt the 3.0 and add some aftermarket stuff to beef up the hp, or would getting a 4.0 and doing the same thing have a better result. My plan was to drop it 3/5, add some nice wheels/tires, built a 5.0 and have some fun. But I'm starting to wonder if I bit of more I can chew and I should just build a motor up that already belongs in that platform. Thanks for the help and if you need more information from me, let me know.

Welcome to the forum
Yes, 2004 to 2011 Rangers went Digital which added extra electrical interfaces to deal with
2005 doesn't have PATS(passive anti-theft system) which is one less thing to deal with on 1999-2011 Rangers, 2005 was skipped because of dispute with licensing PATS
In my opinion, I would fix the 3.0l or swap it with a working used one, and then sell that Ranger
Buy another one that would be better for the V8 swap, 1999-2003 were popular, they have PATS but so did 1998-2001 Explorer V8s
Unless you will be racing in a 3.0l limited class there is no reason to build a custom 3.0l Vulcan motor, not good candidates
Now you could swap in a 2005 Ranger 4.0l SOHC with its computer and instrument cluster, computer and cluster are matched sets, only 2005 didn't have PATS
The 4.0l SOHC engine can be 2001-2011 but 2004 to 2011 had the better timing chains
Not an easy swap, but easier than the V8 swap, much less crossover wiring
4.0l SOHC is rated at 207HP, Explorer V8 215HP, so close
I would get a Ford Ranger 2005 "Wiring Diagram" manual, sold on ebay, must be Ford, not Haynes or ??
It will have 3.0l and 4.0l wiring diagrams(and 2.3l) so you can see what the differences are

I guess a motor swap is not a good idea
I have a very tired 2003 3.0. I was looking at a motor swap plan as well, but after searching it doesn't seem to be a good option. I guess I will see what engine overhaul options are available in SoCal
