FX4 vrs FX4 level II
I guess I have been fairly lucky with my 02 FX4. I did had some clutch area problems early in the warranty period. The master cylinder was giving me problems and when I took it to the dealer for replacement they said they also heard some noise from the pilot bearing. When they dropped the transmission to replace the pilot bearing, they noticed the slave cylinder was a little wet so they replaced that too.
Since then I have had no problems with the clutch and I have a little over 56,000 miles on it now. I tow a lot so I expect to have to replace the clutch around 100,000 miles and I hope there is a good slave cylinder replacement by then.

SniperSmurf didn't you just replace the slave cylinder a month ago?
*Edit* Sorry Chris, upon further review I was thinking of someone else.

No, it's me. I just had the slave and master replaced back at 21,000. They weren't the problem though according to Ford. The problem was my pressure plate. It wasn't disengaging all the way, thus I was constantly slipping. I'm doing that all over again and I'm at 24,246 right now. Less than 3,000 miles (I was well over 21,000 when I had the work done) and I'm already having clutch problems again? WTF! I actually went to a different Ford dealer, one an hour away back in my "hometown". My mom knew the head clutch and tranny mechanic there. I talked to him and he seems to think that if my symptoms are the same all over again, plus when going from a dead stop in first I get a squeal, that they didn't bleed my new slave cylinder right, causing it to now bleed on my clutch which is resulting in my slipping. When I actually have the time that I can afford to be without my truck for a few days I'll be dropping it off at the local dealership. I'll be speaking directly with the service dept. manager and will tell him he WILL warranty ANYTHING that needs replacing due to error on their part, REGUARDLESS if the part is a friction surface (i.e., my clutch) or not. I will also give him the ultimatum that if it is not fixed properly this time I'll take it to a non-ford mechanic and Ford will foot the bill. This is a new f***ing vehicle, I shouldn't be going through these problems yet. Hell, even Collin, Dave, et al. shouldn't have these problems yet, IMO.
Well I Did It!

In retrospect I probably would have been more than happy w/ the regular FX4 myself. The LII really is more than I need. But as I said, the price differential made it seem like a steal.
And w/ my experience w/ the clutch in this thing.. I might'a gone automatic too. I hear really good things about the new 5-speed auto.
At any rate, best of luck man..

Bringing this one back from its grave.
Now that the 08's are out and no more level II. I believe the only options that you cant get on the FX4 are the nice Alcoas, and the Bilstein shocks.
The wheels are nice but not a big deal in going aftermarket. But, are the Bilstein shocks really that much better that the Rancho shocks they offer.
I am thinking of getting a new FX4.

so that makes the 08 FX4 like a Level 1.5 lol
But are the Bilsteins really someting I am going to miss, thats the only functional thing that didn't carry over as an option.
Bilsteins Vs Rancho shocks anyone?

The ranger was the only ford fx4 with bilsteins....andthe only one with alcoas.......the f150s, superdutys all had ranchos and oem wheels......i think it brought the ford fx4 back together. kinda.
I've said before, but I like the Bilsteins in my truck. So much that I bought similar shocks for my toy car. Given the Bil's come highly recommended in those circles too. But overall I think Bilstein makes one helluva product. Better than Rancho? I can't say. And I will probably never know as Bilstein has not given me any reason to shop around.
Because its still relative to them. Just as why I am looking through the FX4 Level II threads. I just bought a black 02 Ranger FX4 twin stick. (so not technically labeled a Level II ... but it has all the Level II goodies).
I really wanted a FX4 Level II twin stick.... but never expected to get one. They are hard to find and when you do they are expensive. This was a fluke... a friend found it forsale on kijiji for a great price only an hour and a half away from me, By the description i expected a complete disaster. BUT to my surprise it was in amazing condition. The guy worked at a ford dealership and bought it as a beater but was getting rid of it cause it was a hog on fuel he said.
This was a lady owned ranger... she dealer maintained it and she traded it in on a brand new F250 FX4 Superduty Diesel.
This guy was a service advisor at the ford dealership... and ive worked at a ford dealer.. When cars/trucks come in with over 60,000 kilometers (NOT MILES) they just feel old and worn out. So to him this truck was old junk. I got a sweet price and i love it.
Now I have a 2002 Ford Ranger FX4 Level II twin stick (yes i am calling it a level 2), and a 2003 Jeep Wrangler TJ Rubicon. BOTH of which will never see a winter with me. Both were undercoated and have very little rust. And a 91 Mustang GT that has never seen winter ever. runs 11's.

Lol, you make a comment about someone looking up old threads and in the process bumped a thread that hasn't seen activity in a year.
Welcome to the site, it's good to see another Canuk.
On a side note, if I'd have known I could custom order a fx4 w/o those ugly flares I would have.

the only mechanical difference is a torsen brand limited slip. that doesn't make it an overall better truck. not all level 2's came with twin sticks, hell some even came with an automatic transmission and electric tcase.

level 2 is overall a better truck but you can do simple things to any fx4 to make it just as good im sure you want to customize your truck anyway
