Have a bad 3.0 looking to swap out with another, need some info.

So i have a 1999 ranger 4x4, it has a 3.0 flex fuel with a 5spd stick. The current motor the #5 cylinder that piston has a hole blown/melted through the side by the top and the oil rings are broke. I looking to just put another 3.0 in it, since i can't figure how this happened and don't want to take the chance that i replace the piston and it happens again. Now I have done a lot of research and that exact motor was only made from 1999-2001. I am wondering what is the difference between that 3.0 and the other years? I have been told if its not the exact same motor within those years it will be a lot more work to put a different year in. How much harder would it be to put another in say form 93-98? And what else in the way of work needs to be done?

You will have to stay 96 or newer to work because thats when OBD2 came out and it'll be a headache to swap to OBD1. Also the 3.0 was pretty much the same all the way through they changed minor things like intakes and maybe a few sensors. Id stay close to 99 that way its not to much difference but other than PCM changes they should be about the same. The 03 year had the most power but idk if its worth the 5hp or so more to change it idk what all is different between those years.

Yes, as long as its a 3.0l OHV Vulcan engine

Ford also had the 3.0l DOHC Duratec and the 3.0l SHO(yamaha) which are different engines, just the same displacement, 3 Liters

The 3.0l Vulcan was used in these vehicles: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Vulcan_engine

BUT..............so were the 3.0l DOHC and SHO in some of them, so watch the VIN number
Engine code is the 8th digit in the VIN
Codes for cars seen here: https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Vehicl...passenger_cars

3.0l Vulcan used U or 2
3.0l DOHC used S
3.0l SHO used Y

In Trucks and Vans Vin code for 3.0l Vulcan was V or U

I just looked my 99 3.0 up on the Title, and it originally had a Vulcan. Now it has some feeble excuse for a 3.0 out of a '97 Probe. I know this because of the oil filter, which won't fit on ANY Ranger, apparently. :(

1992 Probe?

The 3.0l Vulcan was used in these Fords:
1986–1997 Ford Aerostar
1986–2007 Ford Taurus
1986–2005 Mercury Sable
1990–1992 Ford Probe
1991–2008 Ford Ranger
1992–1994 Ford Tempo
1992–1994 Mercury Topaz
1994–2007 Mazda B3000
1995–2000 Ford Windstar

The FWD cars used the engine sideways so did have different bolt on accessories, like the oil filter housing
But the block and heads were the same, different head gaskets but same heads

Are the engine mounts the same on all 3.0 Vulcans or do they need to be replaced?

1991 to 1997 3.0l Ranger are the same
1998 to 2008 3.0l Ranger are a bit different

Cars and Vans with 3.0l are different than these as well

I am attempting to do a 3.0l Taurus 2002 swap into my 3.0l Ranger 2000 and wondering if I can use the ranger mounts on the Taurus block and also wether or not you can put a front wheel drive engine into a rear wheel drive engine as long as you swap everything over

The Ranger 3.0l mounts will bolt to the Taurus 3.0l Vulcan block, as said above Taurus had 2 different 3.0ls in 2002, 3.0l Vulcan and the 3.0L 24-Valve Duratec

The head gaskets on FWD 3.0l are different because coolant flow thru the engine was different

Some have said it didn't matter, I have never done it so can't say, but I think you would end up with hot spots in the heads
