Have to give it up

Moving to the country, and lots of gravel roads etc. Looking at trading the 2005 Ranger and topper in for an explorer to control the dust, something in the 2010 to 2016 range with a tow package.

Anything I should look out for, stay away from, make sure I get.

Thanks for your input.

There are a few issue with with the Echoboost engines, you will need to read up on those
Turbos give that extra power but one more thing to go wrong, lol
Keep the oil changed, turbos are hard on oil

FWD will have less issues than AWD but nothing specific to the Explorer, that's just the second law in physics, "The more stuff there is the more stuff there is to break", they use a fancy word for it, entropy, but basically it means everything in the universe has a gradual decline into disorder......."the more stuff there is the more stuff there is to break", lol.

Like most newer vehicles you have a choice of automatic trans or automatic trans, lol, so no choice.
It will have a 6F 6-speed trans, GM and Ford developed this transmission, 2002, it is what it is, an automatic, keep it cool and service it

Have Ford dealer do a used car inspection, $100-$150, if seller says no then walk away, that wasn't the car for you
Generally an inspection will find some minor issues so seller will take at least few hundred off the price, so inspection is free, unless vehicle is PERFECT and then its worth the $150 to find that out, lol

I didn't remember the ecoboost until you mentioned it, but good to know.

I've always been under the impression that the Ranger and Explorer used similar dive trains with similar engines. Will probably hang onto the 2005 and try to get an Explorer with a 4.0 to give me lots of spare parts.

4th generation explorers, 2005 to 2010 were the last of the rear wheel drive that were similar to Rangers of those same years

2010.5 to current was 5th generation and not really any Ranger similarity, FWD or AWD

Good read here on Explorers, and which years might appeal to you: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Explorer
