Help!!!
1994 2.3 5spd manual. I have tried so many things. I miss my truck. It just won't spark. New coil packs, new just about everything. Please, I am running out of options on transportation to work.
Welcome to the forum
1994 was the last year for the 2.3l SOHC Lima engine to use a separate spark system
Spark system has 3 main parts(not counting spark plugs and wires)
Crank sensor, behind timing belt cover, just above crank's timing belt gear
ICM, ignition control module, located on the front of lower intake manifold, behind fan for cooling, known issue, 1989-1994
Coil Packs, BOTH spark plugs fire at the same time in each cylinder, no alternating
Coil packs rarely fail, and in the case of the 1994 2.3l dual spark plug engines BOTH coil packs would have to fail at the same time for No Start, so long shot
ICM or crank sensor issue is more likely
The crank sensor is connected to ICM, crank sensor sends a 12v pulse to ICM when #1 is at TDC(top dead center) this times the spark for all cylinders
ICM then sends this timing pulse to the Engine computer(PCM) so it can time the fuel injectors
This is important, on the dash is the CEL(check engine light), Computer operates this light, CEL should come on with key on, means computer has powered up
CEL should go OFF as soon as engine starts to turn, via starter motor, this means Computer is getting a GOOD timing pulse from the ICM, if CEL stays on then NO timing pulse
So if CEL stays on then you have a crank sensor or ICM issue
ICM has 3 bolts/screws that hold it to the lower intake manifold, these can get rusty, ICM needs all 3 to get a good ground to engine, no ground = no spark
You can only "test" for spark on the exhaust side/passenger side spark plugs and coil pack, some years had a "spark inhibitor" for the intake side coil pack
And in any case BEST WAY to test for spark is the 50/50 test
Spray fuel into the intake
Try to start
If it starts and dies you have a fuel delivery problem
If it doesn't fire then spark(or compression) problem
50/50 instant results
In the case of the 2.3l SOHC Lima engines, the timing belt can break or slip, so no compression and no start even by adding fuel manually
So have a look behind the timing belt cover
