IMO, preventing mating surfaces from making contact is the key to a long life. And IMO full synthetics are better at this than regular oils. But.. when loads get excessively high... this shows how differing brands of full synthetic oil stack up against each other.

Royal purple faired best. But make sure to understand this is an extreme oil film test where excessive pressure is applied.

This doesn't mean that your engine will actually perform like this.
IMO things like a heavy shot of nitrous can do it. Or maybe a well worn engine and broken down oil that's seeing high rpms.

The key is in preventing excessive pressures that would force the sliding parts to touch. That's why my lightning has a upgraded oil system (cobra pump and pickup tube/puck that pushes 75psi when fully warmed up)

I've been using Mobil 1 for quite a while. It's by far chaper at w-m. costs $22 for 5qts

Valvoline is now selling synthetics at wal-mart and its around 18-19, I am thinking about switching away from Mobil 1.

 

Didn't Valvoline do the worst in that test. I think I'm going to try Royal Purple next, my trucks old bones probably needs a good oil, instead of using penzoil and castrol all the time.

i've been using mobil1 for a while. i've gotten the itch to try royal purple but i can't justify 7-8 dollars a bottle when a 5qt jug of mobil1 is like 23$

 

i just keep motorcraft in mine...runs just fine

 

i wonder if the quakerstate Tourqe power is different then the horse power stuff.. thats what i had in it last oil change..

 

Royal Purple and Quakerstate HP/Torque Power are both good oils IMO. as well as Mobil 1 and Castrol. its really a preference thing. none being far superior to the other.

 

yeah, i think i like the 5W30Quakerstate tourqe power(full synthetic) with fram tough gaurd filter combo..

 

I use Amsoil full synthetic on both my truck and quad. Both like it just fine. I change it every 7500 miles on the truck and every 5ish rides on my bike. On the truck I also use an Amsoil filter. When I change it it comes out dark but that doesn't meant its bad. The oil is rated for a 15K mile service life but no thanks.

 

I would like to use synthetic in mine, but with almost 200k, I don't want to ruin it.

 

The only reason I hesatate putting synthetic into an older motor is if it's leaking oil. Gets expensive topping it off every couple days.

I'd have to see what the exact times were before I made any conclusions from this experiment.

He should have traded the lab coat for a stopwatch.

Well.. one of two things are true.

1) He was estimating time by counting out loud while a timing device was taking actual measurements.

2) He's flat out lie-ing.

Based on the times list at the bottom of each page... I suspect the first.

 

This test is valid. I'm sure he had a screen in front of him showing the recording angle and recording time.
