My boss is offering up his 94 Ranger for sale to me and Im thinkin about pickin it up for my kid.Tell me what you think.

Its a 94 green ex-cab 4x4. 4.0 5spd with 230k on it. Body is very clean with no rust or dents. Interior is mint. He says it needs front wheel bearings and a rear leaf spring because it sags on one side.It has good BFG Longtrails on aluminum rims.

Im goin to test drive it this week and if it runs good and the trans is cool Im buyin it I think. He said he would like to get 2000.00 out of it.
I love the fact its the older{better}TTB D35 front end,no rack,no CV's,no unit bearings,no junk auto and the easy to work on OHV 4.0

 

Well if your kid doesn't want it I'll certainly take it. Adoption?

miles sound high, but for 2 grand its practically disposable, and its 4x4

 

The miles on the motor dont bother me at all,I can yank and rebuild these things all day long. I just dont wanna jump into trans and clutch problems right off the bat. Im thinking with those miles there is no way it still has its factory clutch anymore but we will see.

Anyone know what the factory gear ratio is on these? 4.10? 3.73? Kid is already talkin bout pickin up some 31" BFG AT's for it.

 

You really think 230k miles on a 94 is high? I see 02+ vehicles running those kind of miles. That's only 14,300 miles a year. Thats lower then the current yearly avg.


I'd buy it for 2k!

Looks good, Im sure your kid will love it. I know I sure loved my 3rd gen (my first vehicle that ran) I wish I still had it, I miss the whole no car payment thing.

3.27's?? For real? That sounds to tall for a 4x4 but Ford has done dumber things. I was hoping they came with 4.10's so it would be fine with some 31's......31's and 3.27's aint happening tho.

truck looks clean, buy it and worst case, you fix it up and flip it for more coin.

 

Offer him $1500 he will meet you in the middle.

 

i ran 33s and 3.27s a few years back and it wasnt bad.. the OHV motor makes a lot of low end torque and can will have no problem with 31s.. plus it will slow him down a little bit. i think 31s would be fine

That looks like an excellent first vehicle. The body and interior look well maintained. As you said, if the transmission, clutch, and engine seem OK, I'd probably pick it up. It does have a lot of miles, but if you can pick it up for $2000 or less, you can feasably afford to repair some of those drivetrain components in the future and still have an inexpensive yet reliable truck.

 

The truck looks nice. I'd go for it!

Well he is 20 years old and it wont be his 1 ride....more like his 5th.

Im goin to drive it Weds after work and if all works out bringing it home Saturday.

Im already throwing the idea around that since it needs new rear leafs just get some 4" Skyjacker Softrides and then pull the Duff/Skyjacker/Homemade front lift off my B2 and put it on his truck since Im going D44 and coilovers anyway.

 

For 2k its nothing. Even if the engine does go a new one isnt all that much. So say maybeanother grand for parts. So for 3k youpractically have a new truck. New (or maybe just lower mileage) engine. New clutch if it needs it. Im sure the 4x4 works. So what else? The body is in great shape, interior is in great shape. Im all for it.

 

Well......I went and looked at it...and tried to drive it.

Turns out it has a 3.0 and not the 4.0 I was told.Mileage is 212k.Its a good 10 footer tho.Found lots of hidden rust.
Behind passenger rear tire the bed is all rusted and bubbling under the paint,core support is gone,front edge of hood is rusting really bad,all four leaf spring mounts are waisted and clear is peeling all over. Leaf sping is broke in half and is touching the tire.And as soon as I touched the brake pedal to start it for my test drive the rear brake line blew out....every single inch of metal brake line is junk.

I was kinda bummed to say the least.However the motor fired right up and ran smooth and dead quite,clutch felt ok on my 2 foot long "drive",interior is better than I expected and everything else seems to be in good working order.

But with no way to drive it to make sure the trans works good,test 4wd and see what kind of power it still has I cant see paying more than a 1000.00 for it concidering all the repairs it needs to make it drivable.

 

looks exactly like my truck... they have 3.73 gears with a limited slip rear end. i got the 4.0 though. oh and 31's will fit with NO lift. i had some on mine and it did fine.
