Is it possible to indentify the msnuma transmission in my Ranger with the VIN number. The truck has the indentification tag is missing and the door post tag is missing. 1992 2.3L SOHC.

Welcome to the forum

Manual or automatic?
2WD or 4x4?

Automatic will be A4LD model, 1985 to 1994 Rangers

M5OD-R1(M5R1) for manual trans, 1988 to 2012 Rangers

Either one is engine specific, meaning an A4LD from a 3.0l won't fit on a 2.3l engine, same for M5R1, one from a 4.0l ranger won't fit on 2.3l engine, no adapters for that.

Internally they are the same "model", it is the Bell housings that are different and can't be changed
Also a 2WD trans won't fit 4x4 and visa versa

And no, the VIN can tell you year and engine size and where it was built but thats about it, VIN decoder here: http://www.therangerstation.com/tech...IN_Codes.shtml

If you ever have the M5R1 out, like when changing the clutch, there are 3 rubber plugs at the rear of the upper shifter assembly that should be changed, they often leak.

Some ideas here: Shift Rail Plug Maintenance : The Ranger Station
