Maybe blown up 98 2.5
Maybe blown up 98 2.5
Hey guys/gals! My name is Dave and i just bought a 98 Ranger 2.5 2wd. i bought it for $150, has 229k, body is in great shape, interior is in great shape, 5 speed with a new clutch. here is the issue, i know this engine is the non-interference engine and all, timing belt looks like hell. The guy said its never been changed, Water pump was broken in half because the Fan was sheared off at the shaft that connects the clutch to the water pump. i think the fan sheered half way off and that is what caused the water pump to vibrate out of balance and completely break the pump. i tried to start it and it sounds like there is no compression at all. I think the water pump breaking had maybe jolted the motor enough to mess with the already weak and disintegrated belt. the belt didn't brake completely but from what i can see it really looks original. now when i go to start it, the "no compression sound" could be that the timing is so far off that the valves are opening at the wrong time and in lines making it not have compression? I've been a building cars roughly my whole life but never a 2.5 ranger motor. i know worst case i can get my money back threw scrap or even part out, but was gonna get your opinions before i pick it up tomorrow. thank you in advance!!

You have a Lima engine also called The Pinto engine since it was first used in the 1974 Ford Pinto
They came in 2.0l, 2.3l, and from 1998 to 2001 the 2.5l which you have
The 2.3l and 2.5l are the same engine, 2.5l is stroked, so different crank and connecting rods, everything else is the same
Yes, most likely the timing belt shifted, or has stripped teeth and valves are opening at the wrong time or stuck open
And yes, non-interference, so no harm done.
I would have a look behind belt cover and see if belt is moving at all
These are very reliable engines, and very hard to break in a permanent way, lol
Rangers got the 2.3l Duratec DOHC in late 2001, not to be confused with the 2.3l SOHC Limas they used from 1983 to 1997, just a heads up for google searches

Well I removed the radiator and burned blackish water came from it which tells me head gasket. So head gasket and timing belt is gonna get done. Well first I’ll put the timing belt on just to make sure it starts and don’t knock, if all is well I’ll do the head gasket. I have a feeling he over heated throw thing. Is this aluminum head?
If truck is in good shape then someone may want it for a V8 conversion, 1998-2000 Rangers are good years for that swap, body computer is not connected to engine computer, no PATS, speedometer is on rear axle, not transmission
Sell the trans to get your money back out then sell the rolling chassis
The M5OD-R1(M5R1) trans will only fit a 2.3l or 2.5l Lima engine, bellhousing is part of the case
And the M5R1 rarely fails, but someone may want it to replace the older TK or FM transmission used with 2.3ls in the 1980's
