I agree, on my '93 I had a cover and it most certainly helped quite a bit. Though I guess I can't complain too much, in the '93 I got about 16.5 mpg with my 3.0. At least now I have power to go with that gas mileage. Not to mention a much nicer truck overall.

i have a 3.0 and before i got the cover, if i was going up a big hill in really bad head wind i could not go past 70-75. now i can keep on accelerating. i never figured out my milage gain but if it removes that much drag i can feel, than it has to improve milage.

stock, the best i got was 270 miles to the tank. that's almost 14mpg.

now, with my roofrack, grille guard, toolbox, 32's, 15x8's, etc...

i get 200 miles out of a tank, on the highway. adjust the 9.5% or whatever, for my tires being off. 219 miles.

219/19.5 - 11

let's assume i only let my tank get down to 18 gallons gone. 12

just around town, it's not any better. prolly a couple less...

def. not fuel efficient.

hey christian why are you dividing the total driven miles by the total amout your tank holds? that would make your mpg pretty bad.

in case anyone doesnt know its...

miles / gallon

miles on the trip odometer / amount of gallons added to the tank to FILL it up.

I'm averaging between 16.5-18.5 with 5 speed 4.0 w/ 4.10 gears, 33" tires and 3" body lift. Even when using 4x4 it doesn't seem to change much. Guess I'm one of the lucky ones.

I am willing to bet the key to your situation is keeping it to 60 MPH. In my experience as soon as you pass 65 things go down-hill rather quickly.

I average about 16-18 MPG in my 2003 4.0L powered 4x4 w/ manual trans, 4.10 gears, and 31" BFG AT's (read: 100% stock LII drivetrain). If I am 'very' good and never excede 2000 RPM, I can nip at 19-20 MPG.. even in town. I managed this in a few tanks this summer just to prove the point.. but lemme tell you: shifting at < 2000 RPM sure makes for a slow, un-exciting commute.

I have a tonneau cover. I also had one on my last truck. I maintain a very complete fuel log. Every drop of gasoline that went into either this or the last truck has been logged. And in both cases I see very little, if any improvement in MPG when using the cover vs not. In my opinion the tonneau cover does not save you nearly enough fuel to justify the cost.. even if we are talking about a relatively cheap < $200 cover.. you need to rack up a *lot* of miles to recover that cost. ... Although it does one helluva job at keeping my groceries dry!

i usually get about 23 MPG normal driving. but once i start racing around town like a crazed madman and going offroad my MPG's really go down to about 18 - 19. i think having a 4 cylinder and 5speed manual helps out a lot too.

ford needs to make a decision. either juice some more miles out of this engine, or pump up the torque and HP. fords 5.4v8 gets the same mileage as the v6 and has 2 extra cylinders and is alot bigger... so ya, thats my 2 cents.

from what i have heard (owners of the new 5.4) is that they average 10-14 around here.

alot of the mpg numbers depend on weather and altitude.

I normally tuck up behind a tractor trailer and follow them on to work. Needless to say it save me gas. I get bout 30-40 miles extra on a tank of gas. MPG....Still unknown. Waitng for the 35's and gears.

As for the F-150 mileage, I don't believe it. My dad has a '94 with the 5.0 V8 and I'm lucky if I get 12 MPG. He used to have a '97 with the 4.6 V8 and it was better, you could get 12 on a regular basis but, neither of them were close to the 16-17 I get in my Ranger.

Our trucks are as aerodynamic as a brick, and if were looking for any type of fuel economy were driving the wrong vehicle.
