I agree, on my '93 I had a cover and it most certainly helped quite a bit. Though I guess I can't complain too much, in the '93 I got about 16.5 mpg with my 3.0. At least now I have power to go with that gas mileage. Not to mention a much nicer truck overall.

stock, the best i got was 270 miles to the tank. that's almost 14mpg.
now, with my roofrack, grille guard, toolbox, 32's, 15x8's, etc...
i get 200 miles out of a tank, on the highway. adjust the 9.5% or whatever, for my tires being off. 219 miles.
219/19.5 - 11
let's assume i only let my tank get down to 18 gallons gone. 12
just around town, it's not any better. prolly a couple less...
def. not fuel efficient.

hey christian why are you dividing the total driven miles by the total amout your tank holds? that would make your mpg pretty bad.
in case anyone doesnt know its...
miles / gallon
miles on the trip odometer / amount of gallons added to the tank to FILL it up.

I average about 16-18 MPG in my 2003 4.0L powered 4x4 w/ manual trans, 4.10 gears, and 31" BFG AT's (read: 100% stock LII drivetrain). If I am 'very' good and never excede 2000 RPM, I can nip at 19-20 MPG.. even in town. I managed this in a few tanks this summer just to prove the point.. but lemme tell you: shifting at < 2000 RPM sure makes for a slow, un-exciting commute.
I have a tonneau cover. I also had one on my last truck. I maintain a very complete fuel log. Every drop of gasoline that went into either this or the last truck has been logged. And in both cases I see very little, if any improvement in MPG when using the cover vs not. In my opinion the tonneau cover does not save you nearly enough fuel to justify the cost.. even if we are talking about a relatively cheap < $200 cover.. you need to rack up a *lot* of miles to recover that cost. ... Although it does one helluva job at keeping my groceries dry!
