Went and found a 1996 Ranger...
well i went and looked at a 1996 ford ranger today it was green. It is 4wd and 5 speed manual. It has some rust where the camper cover was rubbing on cab, some rust near the doors (standard cab) and a cracked windsheild (small spot)
It has scratches and dings, has been in a slight wreck in the front involving new hood, lights and bumper and slight bodywork. 166000 miles on it and it is a v-6 (couldnt see what liter size.) the guy wants around $3500. Is it worth looking at and possibly buying for my first truck?

Brandon - Wait it out. If you are willing to spend $3500, you can buy a much better truck. I got a deal last year for a 97, auto, 4 cyl long bed, sounds like a little better on the body with 78000, for $1800. I may have got an outstanding deal, but you can find a decent one for $2500.
Sit tight.
That's what I hate about looking for a vehicle. Some people get so invested into their trucks that they overprice them, then get insulted if you go a lot lower on the price. I was looking at an s-10 93, when I found my son's 97. About the same mileage, but not as nice, he wanted $3200, I offered $2700 and he turned it down. The best deal I never made.
He called me 3 months later offering that price after I had bought the Ranger...

well im not really willing to spend 3000 on the truck maybe like 2500 or 2000 but i doubt he will take it even if i did want it. I didnt get much time to look at it and all, didnt get to drive it or nothing. Tomorrow I will get pics all around, inside and underneath. Im not going to buy a clunker.

Id stay away also. I may have overpaid myself, but I got my 96 STX 4wd 4.0 5speed Extra Cab with 80,000 miles last summer for $5000. Everything is fairly solid on it. There is no rust (many light scratches though) I am happy with what I got for what I paid. Other trucks that I saw were from dealers with 150,000 miles on them in my price range.
