In need of guidance buying a ranger
In need of guidance buying a ranger
Hello everyone! I am posting here because i figure this would be the best resource for the info that I need.
i am looking to replace my daily driver soon and i have decided on a mid-late 2000’s ranger.
what i need to know is the good/bad/ugly about these trucks. Any particular features/years to avoid, things to check/ask about so i don’t end up going “i wish i had known about THAT sooner”
like with my subaru, i wish i would have known ahead of time that the harmonic balancer pulley likes to disintegrate around 200,000 km, or that it is an inevitability that you will need to replace the wheel bearings.
the rangers that seem to be most common where i am are ext. cab, 4l v6, 2wd, and there is a pretty even mix of 5 spd and auto. i would love to find a 4 cyl, but they appear to be rare.
any info/red flags to look for would be much appreciated!

Used Ranger buying guide here: https://therangerstation.com/ford_ra...de/index.shtml
It has links to specific years
Overall a Ranger, OR Mazda B-series, are good reliable vehicles
The Mazda B-series was built by Ford so pretty much everything except the body and trim is a Ranger, and they sell for less money, so keep an eye open
B4000 = Ranger 4.0l
B2300 = Ranger 4cyl, 2.3l
The 2001-2004 4.0l had timing chain issues, 2005 and up had the newer parts from factory
In late 2001 Rangers got the 2.3l DOHC Duratec engine, a Mazda L engine, it was reliable and more powerful than earlier Ranger 4cyls, 2.3l SOHC Lima engine

I have a 03 ranger and it has almost 400,000 on the body. I put a newer engine it because the old one was neglected by a previous owner(s). So far the truck has lasted me and served very well. If I could buy another one manual tranny brand new, I would.
The only draw back I don’t like is the starter motor location cause it’s a bit tight of a squeeze to replace. But overall I’m still impressed with the truck. Ive owned a Subaru Impreza for about 150,000kms and last going off it needed pretty much all engine gaskets replaced. I also owned a Jeep Tj wrangler that I couldn’t keep on the road with how often things broke. My rangers has primarily been all preventative maintenance aside from the engine job( perk of a high mileage vehicle with low maintenance).
Even just now after a severe blizzard I had a wire broken or short most likely from the ice build up and with the support of this forum the truck is back up running strong.
im a fan of the 4.0’s myself, but the 4 cylinder would be nice for the fuel economy. Good thing with these trucks is they are everywhere. I bought one off a neighbour for a driveway plow for very cheap.
rangers typically have good rear axles and drivetrain as well, for example my rear axle is a 31 Splines 8.8 with factory ford lsd
