Ok I have a 2.3L manual 1993 ranger like you all know. iam lookin into a fx4 shifter but I want to make sure they are the same tranmissions and i dont know if they are.

I don't think Ford changed them, but I can't be sure.

 

I don't think they are, your best bet would prolly be to call your local Ford dealer and jsut get the model # for each tranny. or maybe jsut ask them this question. i'm googling right now, I'll post if I find anything.

 

They aren't the same, but the extent to which they are different is something I am not sure of. It may only be the internals that are different. You have an R1 and the FX4 has an R1HD.

The tranny will definatley be different, but you could still use the shifter. It just depends on the connection between the selector and the shift arm. The current FX4, XLT and Edge use the same type, while older models may be different. Mine looks like a cylinder with a wide horizontal groove in front, and a thin vertical one in back. The vertical is an alignment groove, while the shift arm cam bolt uses the front horizontal groove to lock in place.

You can tell right away. Just pop off the cupholder console and look at the connector. Ford either used the cam bolt connector like mine, or a direct bolt-on arrangement like the Hurst.

Hmm, doesn't look good. Looks like the whole assembly has been rotated 90 degrees since 1993. My cam bolt points to my doors, while yours is front to back. The only other thing might be to replace the selector as well, but that may not match either. Dang.

 

ya i see that now. quick question how much everything run you because there telling me the shifter is $113 and the ball is $80

 

I think I paid about the same. Around 110 for the arm and 75 for the ball.

 

If worse comes to worse you can jsut get a hurst shifter instead of the FX4 right?

Why would you NOT want the Hurst? Its the single best mod I've made to my truck. I absolutely love it.

 

Dunno about that. Hurst shows the same part number for all 4 banger Rangers 88-00 in their catalog. Yet when I spoke to them, they said it was now a single number (391-5020) for all the Rangers. My guess is that since Hurst replaces the selector, then it doesn't matter how the stick is attached. Which is good news, since that could mean the selector tips have remained the same.

BUT, there's no telling if the new selector attaches the same as the old one. Also, there could be minor differences in the tips. I try to avoid rigging transmission parts, since that usually leads to heartache. The only way to tell is to closley compare the the selectors from your truck and a newer model Ranger. The selector is a chunk of machined metal, so it shouldn't cost too much (hopefully).

My advice would be to try calling Hurst and see if they can offer some advice about interchanging selectors from different years. They are good guys, and usually very helpful. Also, the guys at Bob Utter Ford were real good at giving me advice when I got my FX4 shifter. They can help answer questions about swapping parts. Their number is in my FX4 shifter section.
