Hey guys I found a really cheap 2001 3.0l ranger, with only 16000 original miles! Truck is mechanically perfect. My question is.. Is it worth buying a 2wd truck with a 3.0? I want to lift it and put 33's on it. I'd only rarely be going off roading. Is it worth getting? Or should I keep looking for something better?

 

Sounds a goo find with that very low mileage. Knowing how the owner took care of her, especially service record and way of driving it matters too. Personally, I think it worth to give a shot..

 

If it is a good deal then buy it and flip it if you want a 4x4.

Running 33" tires will require you to change the axle gearing, with a 2WD you only have to change 1 axle, 4WD both axles need to be changed, so less $$ with 2WD
and if you don't need 4WD then.........why not stay with 2WD

You can also go with a Limited slip(trac lock) rear axle when you do the swap, which will help alot on or off road

 

I had a 2wd, 3.0 with a lift and 33s for a long time (still have 2 of those 3 ) and it's not an issue.

The main things you'll want to do to help out with the big tires is regearing to 4.56 in the rear end (very important, especially if it has 3.73 gears now) and getting a tuner (not as important but definitely worth it).

 

Mine has been very good off road for a 2wd. I'm happy with it. 3.0 is good, just not great for power or fuel economy.

 

I have 33's with a 2.5L four cylinder.

They are no where near as bad to live with as everyone makes them seem.

I do have a 8.8 rear end with 4.10 gears and a 5 speed though, but many people make it seem like your truck will be a nightmare to drive and blah blah blah and it really isn't bad at all. I'm still able to drive on the highway and everything. No problems.

 

Great comment about the 3.0 motor: Good motor but no power and bad fuel economy. I had to laugh....and would, except I have one too...
