A buddy of mine alerted me to a CL ad for a Leer camper shell. I called the owner and everything checked out as it came off a 2004 Ford Edge so after inspecting it, I bought it. It will be getting scheduled for a visit to my body shop tech for matching paint and clear coat soon. It even has a roof rack.
Timing is everything. $350 sure beats $2600 for a new one.

I got what I think is a fair price to color match my Leer 100R topper this morning. This is a local Ford where I had the front bumper painted. They are removing all (3) windows, the roof rack and rear door to sand, prime, paint and clear coat the shell then reinstall everything - $600.00. I drop it off Nov 8 and they will have it a week to 10 days. We plan on keeping this truck as it has only 54k original miles on it.

The rear 3rd brake light is not the original Leer light and does not work. I will remove it before the topper goes in for paint, prime and clear coat. I found a direct Leer replacement brake light on eBay which I will install after new paint. I also found new Leer logos for the topper on eBay. A work in progress.

In prepping for paint I removed the roof rack and and Leer side decals. My plan is to drop it off at the body shop and install the rack after the topper is repainted. I am glad I removed it as it really needed cleaning, painting and just some refurbishing as well. The previous owner of this Leer shell pretty much neglected it. So I cleaned and sanded it, then repainted it with a rattle can Rust-Oleum Satan black. And it will be reinstalled after I get the topper back from the body shop. The racks painted up nicely. I purchased new S/S mounting hardware to help prevent corrosion. I kinda like the slick top look, but with existing holes in the roof, the rack will need to be reinstalled. I am planning to have the linex over the rail bedliner sprayed in while the shell at the paint shop.
Smooth top without the roof rack.
Roof rack being repainted. The taped off area is the rubberized portion of the rack which does not get paint.

If your rear door latches break , most do, at the cable ends, there is a cheap fix at Auto Zone. The Dorman kits. Easy to do. I went ahead and ordered a bag of door panel keepers from Amazon, because you will break many taking the door panel off. If not break them, stretch them to weakness.

Over the years, I always rinsed the truck well with water, prior to any washing. Only used real car wash like Blue Coral, and plenty cleaner wax from McGuiers, and Mothers. Always got the bugs off the front, every day. Never let them bake in the sun. Their body fluids eat clear coat.

Check your filler neck hoses and the purge valve. You can scour the internet and maybe find a solution.
