Pulsating Brakes - ABS Issues
Pulsating Brakes - ABS Issues?
Hey all, I am new to the Forum. I just bought a 2002 Ranger EDGE 4X4, and I am already having brake issues. Sometimes when I hit the brakes, the pedal pulsates and goes to the floor. As soon as I release it, it is fine again. I am not losing any fluid or getting any idiot lights. It feels to me like the ABS system is bleeding pressure from the rear brakes because it thinks that a wheel is locking up. It seems to do it the most whenever I am coming to a stop downhill with the wheels turned. Straight line breaking it usually works fine. Any thoughts? Thanks for the help guys!

Just found this by searching. Maybe I have a wheel speed sensor dropping out?

I don't have this fancy data scanner, so I guess I will go with the trial and error method. It seems to only happen when I turn, so I would probably rule out the rear sensor. That leaves a 50/50 shot of success on the first try! 100 bucks is pretty steep, but I don't see any other solution short of just disconnecting the ABS (prob not a good idea for a DD). Thanks for all of the kind help!
Buzzing abs
I have the same abs 'drop-out- problem on my '99 4wd ranger - mechanic says I might need new hubs because you can't just change the sensors on these. Anyone ever work on this problem on a '99?
By the way - all those guys that say "just pull the fuse" are so out of touch with reality 'cause when you pull the fuse, you lose the speedo AND overdrive. That is not an acceptable plan - Oh, btw, you also get crappy shifts without that fuse in because the tranny uses vehicle speed to set the shift severity.
Thanks for your help, all

New ford bearings with abs sensors can be had here for 200.

Can you just change theses sensors with out changing the wheel bearings?
If so i have a toasted whee bearing with a good abs sensor (has 125k) 25 shipped.

I realize this is an old thread about 7 years old, If your having a pulsating brake problem, before shelling out all the money for new parts try cleaning the sensor and ring inside the rotor chances are that dirty parts are causing big problems making you think that your running bad rotors or sensors it worked for me I was thinking of replacing it all but after I cleaned everything up the pulsation went away...Steve

Similar symptoms as many posters... low speed ABS activation. I removed the ABS sensor (broke it) and found a significant amount of grease on toner ring. Many teeth have grease that span from tooth to tooth. Has any one found that simply cleaning this grease off the toner ring solves the problem?
Taking everything apart and thoroughly cleaning it worked wonders on my truck....was having same problems as described in this thread. Also was leaking grease from inside seal but seal has to be replaced when taking things apart anyway...
