Purge Canister issues?? please help

I have a 90' ford ranger regular cab 4x4 with a 2.9 and a 5 speed. The issue I'm having im told has to do eith the purge canister. But im not sure even where to begin. Truck starts up and idles high around 1200-1500 when you give it throttle it stumbles. You take off in first and floor it and it falls on its face almost like its overfueling. But if ypu back off to about 1/4 throttle it will accelerate. Still spits and sputters. You try to fill it with fuel and it leaks out of what appearsto be the top of the tank. Also the fuel gauge doesn't work it reads about a quarter tank over full all the time. Im not sure what to so or howto go about fixing my issues so any help would be much appreciated! Thanks!!

You should begin with the fuel leak. Primarily, it is at least a safety issue, and I think you are experiencing a vacuum problem from the emissions system. I am assuming your vehicle is pretty much factory and nothing has been modified or bypassed correct? The PCV system can't work properly if there is a leak in the gas tank or fill neck or gas cap. Your engine is sucking in more air instead of tank fumes. The purge canister is a part of the PCV system. Also, while you have access to the top of the tank, you can deal with the fuel level sending unit.
