I need to set the timing properly because I changed the timing belt and just adjusted it by ear and its running good.

I need to get it smogged so I want to be sure the timing is correct. I see a label by the radiator that says: "Disconnect the in-line spout connector" this is prior to checking the timing.

What the heck is an in-line spout connector? I have attached a shot of the label

 

SPOUT(spark out) wire allows the computer to advance spark timing while engine is running.

This wire has a plastic Jumper connector that can be removed so distributor/spark timing can be set manually.

On the 4cylinder it is probably on the passenger side of the engine but it can be just about any where on the SPOUT wire that runs from distributor to the computer.

You will see what it looks like, a black or gray plastic insert, you pull it out of the connector and this disconnects computer control of spark advance, then start engine and adjust distributor using a timing light.

I didn't notice any of the other pictures I saw having this red jumper wire like mine. Is this OK or has it been altered?

That looks more like the bypass for manual or automatic trans

Vehicles are wired for many options if they are not installed then connectors are usually plugged but if the wires needs to pass a signal or power they install a jumper that looks like that.

SPOUT is usually just the plastic insert, no exposed jumper wire

 

So when I set the timing should I leave it plugged in or unplug it?

 

Unplug it, start engine, set timing, turn off engine, plug it back in.

If engine won't start that wasn't the SPOUT connector

If engine runs like crap that wasn't the SPOUT connecter
