$1200-1500. It can vary a lot. You could save a fair amount by removing the front diff and bringing it in alone as well.
You might as well ask around if they will install gears from somewhere else. Some places will charge more because they don't get a mark up, and won't warranty them. An honest place would just charge straight labor and not care.

If you are on pirate4x4.com, search for waynehartwig. He has a running thread to PM him for the lowest price on gears, differentials, install kits, etc. He was cheaper than everyone else, and I saved over $400 (compared to ringpinion.com) by ordering from him. His website is diffsonly.com but PMing him will get you a better price.

Also some shops will only install new gears with full/master install kits, which is isn't a bad idea. Bare minimum should be a minor install kit and a new pinion bearing.

It's easier than it looks, but I don't blame you.
Get a detailed quote if you shop around. Some places may quote with cheap gears and minor install kits, some may be more expensive gears and full overhaul kits.

I know i was quoted 4 hrs roughly do do a rear axle gear change from a local shop at 55$ an hour, plus your cost of gears, youll have to add the work of removing the front diff most likely by the osunds of it with the ifs,

i was qouted $600 i beleive. $300 per axle with the gears i ad already bought. They were about $400 or cheaper. I forget the website that sells yukon gears for a really good price with master install kits....Its a good website, shane bought off of them so he'll remember that site.

quick question..

would it be possible to just regear the rear for now and keep it out of 4wd?

or remove the front driveshaft?

yes that'd be half assing it, but i very rarely use 4wd anymore.

It would be super ghetto but you could. I would pull the front driveshaft so you don't accidently flip the 4x4 switch and do a bunch of damage.

I did it for a while. When I sas'd my truck the first time the axle wasnt geared right. so i never hooked up the driveshaft and just ran around with just the rear geared

well depending on how much they wanna charge for that, i might just do the rear axle. but we'll see. just wanted to know if its an option.

also, if i go 4.88's, will that be too much gear if for some reason i decide to step down to 33's?

I don't see 32s posing a problem at all. What gears do you have?

Yeah, I'd go with 4.56's if that is a possibility.

I've been running 35s for 4 years now without regearing, no tranny problems. Also you have 32s? Those are an inch over what comes stock on an FX4 Lvl 2, they're not gonna matter to the tranny.

I ran 4.88s and 33s on my sport trac, same drivetrain (4.0L SOHC 5r55e). It was fine, I loved it in town, off road, towing, etc. On the freeway (70+) it was still okay, but not ideal. I never got over 14mpg but the performance rocked. I would do it again if I lived in the same area that I did before, and still had a short commute. But 4.56 gears would work a lot better with 33s overall.
