reliability of 98 rangers

as some may know im still looking for a ranger and have come across some 98's that ive liked but i jsut dont know. since its the first year of a new generation my thinking is that its gunna have more problems with it then the 99's and 00's because its the first year. my brother had a 98 and he really didnt like it. now i dont know if it was just his truck or if it is infact all 98's. anyone with one have any problems with it, or notice any diffrence between the 98's and 99/00 ones.
thanks

jeff

one of my friends has a 98 and he has not had any problems with it... he treats that truck like crap (which annoys the crap out of me since its a ranger) and its still running good... its a 2.5 with a 5 speed

98~2000s are pretty good trucks. A couple of problem areas - pulse vacuum hubs on the 4x4's are troublesome. Also, 3.0L have problems with detonation - well, actually most years of 3.0L's detonate but the 98~00 are worse.

I have a 98. What are you planning on doing with it? If you're wanting to make it a serious offroad rig go with 97 or older. The torsion bar setup sucks for offroading modifications. I love my truck but if I'd know what I know now I'd've (oh yeah that's a word) gotten a Gen II. They just look so dang good. I've had no problems with my truck, it's solid.

Well, if you're like me, THAT ain't gonna' work!

My daughter has a 98 -- no real problems. 4 banger 4x2 though. Has a bad cab leak due to a heater having been inproperly reinstalled. I have to tear it down and fix it this summer. It's not typical of the beast, though, just inexpert repair by someone along the line that folded under the seal through the firewall.

55,000 MI with only minor problems: power window hop, driveshaft thump, door lock switch intermittent.

I haven't had any real major problems with my 2000... Actually now that I think about it, my truck has never had any problems, nothing has broken or stopped working, yet... It's coming up on 50k miles in the next couple of weeks or so.

Excuse me? Touch my truck and I'll kill you :) I know whatcha mean. If minor offroading (like I do) is what you're lookin for then the 98 is a great truck. This might be a bit silly but like everytime I get gas (I don't mean Taco Bell) while I'm pumping I look at my front fender/tire area and it just looks so damn good. Then I step back a bit and look at it from bumper to bumper and get all proud. I so love my truck....
It'll suit your needs and as long as you take care of it it'll last nearly forever...

I have a 98 and haven't had any problems, I love my truck! Its a 2.5 banger, but there's just something about it that I love. It does only have 39k on it though so hopefully I won't see any problems once it gets up there in mileage.

mechanically the same asthetically different. I hated the front end of my 94 B-4000 but it was a 4x4 so I got over it.
