Speedometer not working

My speedometer is not working in my 2000 Ranger with a 98 5.0L and rear end from a Mounty. The original Mountaineer Vehicle Speed/RWABS signal goes through the 4WABS (4-wheel antilock break system). Since my 2000 XL only has RWABS, I think I may have a break in the VSS signal to the PCM.

Does anyone have any experience with an 8.8 swap causing a speedometer problem?

What about the ABS system. Is the vehicle speed modulated by the 4WABS system?

Can I make my former 4WABS powertrain compatible with the RWABS chassis?

Although it may just be a bad rear axle sensor (VSS), I appreaciate anyone's help!

On a 2000 RABS trucks like yours, the raw VSS signal comes from the rear axle sensor just like the Mountaineer. From there, it goes to the GEM which outputs a corrected square wave on the gray/black for the speedometer, PCM and speed control (if equipped).

Maybe the sensor in the Ex axle is unplugged or bad. If necessary, it's an easy swap to try the original sensor from your Ranger axle.

I actually swapped in the old sensor (from my Ranger 7.5" open diff). It cleared the ABS light, but didn't correct the speedometer problem. I will get a new VSS tomorrow and see if that does the trick!

Well...I replaced the VSS to no avail. I'm assuming I have a problem with the circuit, but wouldn't that trip an ABS light and cause the tranny to run in "limp mode"?
