Strange power lock issue
Strange power lock issue
Good evening,
Today on my way to work, my power locks began randomly and repeatedly activating, as if I were pushing the lock button repeatedly. It stopped for a while, and started again. Then after parking at work about ten minutes later, it started doing it again. One person suggested that my body control module may be bad. Any ideas? 2002 4x4, 4.0 XLT. Thanks!

Doesn't ring any bells
Can you leave the Fob at home and see if it still does it, you can use a key to open the door, lol
Reason I say that and the "lol", about using the key, is that my wife called me once and said she was stuck in a parking lot and was locked out of her car because "the stupid button wouldn't work", and she was in a hurry and "all this stuff is stupid and never works"
I said "did you try the key in the door".....................long pause.....................she said "never mind", and hung up
I changed the battery in the Fob when she got home and nothing more was said about it
Anyway it could be the key fob is broken, and randomly doing "its thing"
In Rangers its the RAP module that is used for keyless entry, its an add-on to the body computer, in 2002 Ranger the body computer is called the GEM(generic electronic module), it is located behind the radio
RAP module can be a few place, including behind driver seat, it is connected to the GEM
You can clear the memory and reset the RAP Module by following the instructions for your year Ranger, for adding a new Fob
Usually starts with turning key on and off 8 times in 10 seconds, the door locks should then cycle one time, lock/unlock, this erases ALL Fobs in memory, so have all the Fobs you want to add with you
Press either lock or unlock button on a fob, locks should cycle again
Press button on the next fob, then the next, when last fob is added turn off the key and locks should cycle again, confirming you are out of program mode
You should always do this if you "lose" a Fob, so it can't be used to unlock your vehicle any more

It's a fairly new fob, about 2 years old but I'll try pulling the battery if it acts up again. Here is the weird thing, Sunday morning I went outside, and it was doing it again, and the truck hasn't been out since Thursday. I walked around it and it seemed to only be the passenger door doing it. It was trying to lock, not unlock. I tried to unlock it with the fob and it acted like the locks were jammed and wouldn't open. I opened it with the key and started it up and then I could cycle the locks with the door button, and finally the fob again. Shut it off and it hasn't done it since (that I know of).
have had that in other vehicles, and it turned out to be bad wires on the "master" lock. So one of the buttons may be intermittent, wires may be bare and knocking together, etc.
It can happen when standing as well, if the action of the lock jiggles the wires. Might start as it cools off, and randomly as wind blows, etc. Just needs the wires to be close to touching, or the switch to be funky.
Of course the vehicle computer could be bad, but they are pretty reliable, actually, even though they get blamed for a lot of things.
