Welcome to the forum
4R44E "model" was used from 1995 to 2000 in Rangers with 2.3l Lima and 3.0l Vulcan engines.
1998 to 2001.5 on the 2.5l Lima engines, in mid-2001 Ranger got the 2.3l Duratec engine, no relation to the 2.3l or 2.5l Lima engines.
4R44E is the "model" number, like "Ranger" is a Model of Ford Truck, it is NOT a description of what it will be.
i.e. a Ranger might be 2WD or 4x4, have a 4cyl engine or a V6, ect...............it's a Model name
4R44E "model" was different for a 2.5l than if it was for a 3.0l V6, so not interchangeable.
So you won't have a 3.0l 4R44E bolted to a 2.5l, it won't physically fit
4R44E was used from 1995 to 2001.5 with 4 cylinder Rangers, mid-year 2001 Ranger got a newer 4 cyl engine, 2.3l Duratec, it used 5R44E trans
1995 to 2001.5 4R44E from a 2.3l or 2.5l will bolt to your 2.5l
They should all be 4x2, Ford didn't build many 4cyl 4x4's after 1995
