So lately ive been using my truck as a big boom box for work. Ive noticed when leaving it on run (engine off) to listen to the radio for maybe 45 minutes and hour when i start it it normally takes an extra chug or two to get going. this gets more noticible sometimes but is never too bad, at the worst ill stop turning the key and it wont be started but will crank right up on a second try.

Yesterday it was sitting maybe two and a half hours. When i started it was idling at three or four hundred rpm. Smoking and smelling rich. I drove it a little, would move but when i floored it the engine would die, but start back up as soon as i unfloored it. i let it sit and idle for a few minutes, didnt seem to be getting much better (sometimes my truck acts up and just needs to idle for a couple minutes) then i restarted it after 5 minutes and it ran just fine.

Wierd. Im more interested in the first issue. Is the fuel system keeping pressure which is building up somewhere? It really doesnt seem to be my battery being lower causing it?

i guess i should just start leaving my keys on accessory....

my truck had a nasty idle though. sounded like a Harley vtwin

You certainly should be in accessory. You are leaving all the modules up and running, and it atleast tries to prime the fuel system when you initially turn it on. My only suggestion would be low voltage is causing an issue, or possibly a leaky injector(s)

 

Instead of turning the key forward to listen to your radio, turn it backward. No systems will be running with it like this.

I'm not positive if that works on the newer Rangers, but both of my trucks are like that.

in run your fuel pump is always running. im surprised it started for you.

 

Mine primes for 2-3 seconds and shuts off. I don't think it comes back up until it is in 'start' or it see's rpm

 

It shouldn't be if the engine is not started.It should only run for a few seconds when the key is turned to "run" and not "start".
The symptoms sound like a leaky injector.
He turns the key to "run" , the pump builds pressure for a few seconds, pump shuts off leaving the system under pressure , leaky injector drips fuel into the intake manifold.
Also leaving the key in "run" powers all the systems in the truck , adding to battery draw which makes it harder to start.

Makes sense in my mind even though my wife says I aint been right in the head for a while now.

 

I'll make this simple... You pissed the truck off leaving it in run. You're also draining the battery.

The truck should re-learn the proper idle pretty quick. Use ACCESSORY.
