Moates and SCT are the two most popular

Tuning Software : Moates.Net

https://www.sctflash.com/Products/so.../advantage-iii

Runs $400-$600 for software and cables

So there's no way I could directly wire my laptop to the obd2, I'm an electrician and could convert if needed but why would direct wire not work?

You need very specific hardware to rewrite the stored data on the ECM. Up through 2004, a lot of the Ford tuning systems write to a chip attached to the ECM's service port that substitutes its data for the equivalent memory locations on the ECM. Past '04 I believe you have to directly store changes on the computer. That requires additional hardware. Here's one example of something that could do so:
MongoosePro Ford

That's separate from the equipment and software required to datalog and determine the correct changes to build the appropriate tune before uploading it into the ECM.

I have an 02 m5ODR1 turbo Dohc 2.3 the shop I go-to they just hookup the laptop to two machines, one to key log the other through OBD2 or the ecm, I'm curious on what equipment and software I need to do all this as they won't tell me
