Undercoat or wash every week? How do you fight rust?
Undercoat or wash every week? How do you fight rust?
Okay guys, this is my first time driving a truck as a daily driver in the rust belt and i want to protect it. It's brand new and a lot of people are telling me to get the rust proof undercoating. Is this still worth it on new trucks made these days or do you northerns just wash it every week or so?
I can't speak for newer Rangers, but mine is 16 years old and I have zero rust as far as I can tell. I live out in the country on gravel roads and use it as a DD as well even in bad weather with ice and salt on the main roads. I usually just run it through an automatic car wash every two weeks or so and I pay a little more for the undercarriage wash. That's all I've ever done. I'm not sure if this helps, but I thought I'd throw it out there.
I wash mine once a week. The bodies on these trucks don't seem to rust much, Ford must have spend a couple cents and coated them with something. However I still stick the pressure washer nozzle up into the rocker panels and blast off the inside lips of the doors and tail gate.
Your from rochester? Call a Schmitz Auto body up here in buffalo and schedule an appointment for a rustop coating.
Its messy stuff but AWESOME!!!!

Where I work we have restored a few trucks. When it comes to undercoat we use a paint called POR 15. Comes in a can and apply it with a brush right over the rust. I had some left over and put it on the ranger because of all that north east salt mix the DOT puts on the road now and it looks pretty good.
How about both, I undercoated all mine and still wash it once a week. No rust yet. New York loves to put down salt. That new salt brime stuff they have been doin the past two years is tough on cars and trucks.
