worth repairing @ 135k miles
Hello, I lost reverse in my 99 ranger w/ 135k miles(v6 auto). I was hesitant about getting a rebuild for about 1200 and the ford dealership has a new one for 3k. Unfortunately I don't have the mechanical ability to attempt at repairing this myself.
The only issues I've ever had all happened this year and I'm scared of bleeding any more money into this. (ac blower, ball joints, alternator)
With a new trans how much more life do you think I can get out of this. This is my only commuter and suits my needs. The option of getting a new vehicle would only be of consideration if economically it made more sense to spend the 3 grand towards another ranger as my needs in a truck have not changed.
what do you think? Thanks for any response.

I have a 1998 with 151,000 miles on it. Replaced the head gaskets and valve body gasket at 132,000 and it has been going strong. However, with this age and mileage it seems too be eating through parts. I like my truck so I think it is worth it but I doubt it is economical especially if you don't need a truck. As far as replacing it with another ranger, you don't really know what you could be getting yourself into. I have so much parts and money into mine now if I got another truck I would likely have to replace those parts all over again.
If you just lost reverse it could be something stupid like a solenoid or valve body gasket. You could find new valve bodies with solenoids for fairly cheap. If this is the case it should be a lot cheaper than $1200.
