Want to know something strange. I've never had to change it yet. Everytime the 3k miles comes around something is usually not acting up to par and I have to bring it to Ford. So they do it. One time they kept the truck a day later than they expected so they gave my dad and I a total of 5 free oil changes coupons with tire rotation.

I guess I should learn as I think all those coupons may be up and the 3k point is coming up in about 2 weeks.

n3elz 10-19-2005 08:46 PM

3k changes are excessive, even for petroleum oil (if you use a good brand). Big waste of money, in my and many other opinions. You might want to extend that to at least 5K.

Redneckstone 10-19-2005 08:57 PM

no thanks i'll stick with 3000 its not expansive to change and its never done me wrong yet...

Wowak 10-19-2005 09:02 PM

I do full synthetic every 5K (every 4500 odometer miles, correcting for my tire size) due to the extreme-duty nature of my job.. 1+hrs at 80mph, twice a day, 5 days a week. While I normally feel the rest of the "recommended" maintenance schedule is excessive for most owners, I generally follow that, too. I think I'm going to start changing tranny fluid every 2nd or 3rd oil change as well, and a flush ~2x a year.

04lvl2 10-19-2005 09:03 PM

I do it myself along with everything else on the truck, sometimes with the help of members depending on what it is.

It's almost twice as expensive as changing it at 3000. That standard is from a long time ago.

It's a lot of work, and a lot of oil being wasted and put into the "waste stream" when you change it more than it needs to be. Just another thing to think about.

Redneckstone 10-19-2005 09:05 PM

well thats what I am here for

optikal illushun 10-19-2005 09:07 PM

depends, stop and go driving really takes a toll on oil and reduces the cleaning agents. i go between 3-5K but like to keep it closer to 3K.

it costs me $10 to change the oil myself and i take it to advance for them to use for there waste oil burner. preach all ya want but u arent changing my mind.

:stupid: all our oil/solivents gets taken to our city dump they have a oil recyling there...

n3elz 10-19-2005 09:09 PM

Yeah, I know. But then most people don't THINK about it -- they just accept the "common wisdom" which is uncommonly unwise.

But hey, it's your money and time!

Most recycling operations produce further waste products which are toxic, by the way. The more you HAVE to recycle, the more pollutants you generate.

One way or another, recycle or NOT -- you are WASTING petroleum.

optikal illushun 10-19-2005 09:30 PM

sorry but im not gunna let engine oil in my truck more then 5,000 miles.

thats great u do it and im glad ur happy with ur yearly oil changes, but from my experience ill stick with my method.

PharmRanger4x4 10-19-2005 09:34 PM

I start the truck up in the morning. Drive 3.5 miles to school, Turn it off.
Start er up at lunch and go eat and volunteer for maybe about 5 miles. After school it's Hell. I sit there idling back and forth to get out becuase I have to work at 4 usually. I figure with how long my engine is running I'm putting at least 5k miles of "normal driving" from all the little putting around I have to do here.

Might not make sense to some of you but it does to me.

hougy 10-19-2005 11:08 PM

Is there a how-to on changing the oil for rangers? I'd like to see one so if I try and do it myself again I can prepare for any oil to splash in my face like my Taurus did :)

Mr. Special 10-19-2005 11:49 PM

Us OC people dont change our oil, jeez! ahahha jk, but i would if i knew what the hell i was doing!

advantEDGE 10-20-2005 12:05 AM

not trying to jack the thread, but how involved is changing your Tranny fluid? I think I'm SEVERLY behind on that.

93rangerxlt4.02007 10-20-2005 10:22 AM

my buddys 98 had the oil drain plug threads crack completly off and he was screwed untill he got a new oil pan at a junk yeard
