1996 Ranger stuck in park, fuse is fine

I have an automatic, 2WD, '96 Ranger XLT which won't currently shift out of park. Since this isn't a new problem, I checked the fuses and none seemed blown, and even replaced the one that has caused this in the past, even though it was fine. I also tried shifting into neutral with the ignition on, and it wouldn't even allow that. The brake also seemed a fair amount stiffer while I was trying that, than when I had the engine on. The steering wheel will however turn in either case. I've done a little other googling, but can't seem to find a good option. Unfortunately, my truck is currently at a meter. Not the end of the world, but it does add a level of inconvenience. I am on a flat surface, so incline shouldn't be an issue. What else might I try before having myself towed? Solenoids, maybe?

Fixed.

I wanted to mention that I pulled all the fuses once I had sunlight to work by. It turned out to be a fuse which has never been an issue before, and I just couldn't spot at night. For the moment, for anyone running a search, I thought I'd leave this up and mention that it's not a bad idea to also check whether or not the brake lights come on, and if any bulbs are out, in addition to examining things already mentioned. Also, I'm not certain how to properly delete this thread, so if someone wants to weigh in, I can always make this go away. Thanks much!

There is a Shift Lock Actuator on the lower part of the steering column, it is an electric solenoid that has a rod that goes into a hole on the Shifter plate when shifter is in Park position.
When you press on the brake pedal the Brake light power causes this solenoid to activate and pull out the rod so you can shift out of Park.
Check that Brake Lights are working, if not then fuse or Brake switch may be the problem

That is how it is suppose to work.

There is often a Manual Release for these for emergencies.
Look here and get the 1996 Ranger Owners Manual to see if there is one on your model: https://www.ranger-forums.com/genera...1-models-3747/

Couple if places to check here: AGCO Automotive Repair Service - Baton Rouge, LA - Detailed Auto Topics - How To Release A Shifter Stuck In Park
