1999 ford ranger issues
1999 ford ranger issues
Good evening all, I was having an issue with my ford ranger. Im not getting spark to one of my coils. I changed out the coil prior with a brand new one but the issue is getting spark to the coil itself.
Welcome to the forum
I assume 2.5l Lima engine?
It had dual coil packs
On the dual spark plug Lima engines there are two coil packs
One sparks Intake side plugs
One sparks Exhaust side plugs
The intake side coil pack is NOT used when starter motor is turning the engine over, only exhaust side will have spark.
Just a heads up on that.
In 1999 the ICM(ignition control module) is inside the computer, so is not serviceable, but hardly ever fails either.
Each coil pack will have a 3 wire connector, the center Red wire should have 12volts when key is on, so test that both have this 12volts(battery voltage)
Exhaust side coil pack should start sparking when starter motor starts tuning engine.
Intake side should start sparking when RPMs are above 400
The Pulse for when to spark comes from the computer but that pulse timing comes TO the computer from the Crank Position Sensor(CKP), it is located on the front engine cover down by the crank shaft.
If one coil pack is working then CKP sensor is working
