1999 Pats Issue
1999 Pats Issue
I have 99 Ranger 3.0 XLT and the Theft light is giving me a code 1:6 which is failed communication between the PATS module and the PCM, correct? Is that something I can do myself or do I need to go to the dealer? If I could do the change myself what parts would I need exactly? I know I would have to buy the PCM and the PATS as a pair and also get the key reprogrammed. But once again I am not 100% that’s why I’m asking. Thanks for any help y’all can offer.
Welcome to the forum
In 1999 Ranger you have type C PATS so a separate PATS Module, its above the glove box, you need to pull the airbag out to access it
Code 16 means CAN Bus communication error
CAN Bus is the 2 wire network between all the modules in the vehicle
This can be because a module is not powered on
Check fuses 19 and 25 in the cab fuse box, that means PULL THEM OUT and test them not just a quick look, or swap them with similar fuse, but always pull out the fuse in question, this CLEANS the contacts
If Fuses are good then you will need to check the wires on the PATS module, maybe there is some corrosion
Unplug it and have a look
If all looks OK plug it back in and re-test, unplugging and plugging back in CLEANS the connectors
The thing is, is that IF the PATS module was bad, it probably wouldn't flash the THEFT Light or send out a code after 45seconds............................
So next step would be to disconnect PCM(computer) connector in the engine bay, and have a look at the pins and connectors for corrosion
Pins 15 and 16 are the data lines on PCM connector
1999 PATS wiring below
PATS did not use "can't read key", or "wrong key" codes it used "no connection with network"(Computer) code
So thats a good sign its just a wiring issue, no parts needed
And I assune the CEL(check engine light) is coming on with the key?
That means PCM(computer) is powering up, no CEL mean no power to PCM, and no communication with PCM
